About the DDS Format
DDS (DirectDraw Surface) is a container format created by Microsoft for storing GPU textures, widely used in DirectX games, Unreal Engine, and Unity. Its main advantage is built-in block compression: DXT1 (BC1) packs RGB textures into 8 bytes per 4x4 pixel block, while DXT5 (BC3) adds a full alpha channel at 16 bytes per block. Because the data is stored in the exact layout the GPU expects, DDS textures can be uploaded directly to graphics memory without any decoding step, making load times fast and memory use predictable. DDS remains a staple of real-time 3D and game asset pipelines where compact, GPU-ready textures matter.
