About the JPEG Format
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the most common lossy image format, designed for efficient storage of photographic images. The format uses discrete cosine transform compression to dramatically reduce file sizes while retaining visually acceptable quality. JPEG is ideal for photographs and complex images with smooth gradients, where small compression artefacts are imperceptible. It is supported by virtually every device, browser, and application.
