About the EXR Format
EXR (OpenEXR) is a high dynamic range image format developed by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). It is the industry standard in visual effects, animation, and film production for storing images with a wide luminance range. EXR supports 16-bit and 32-bit floating-point channels, multiple compression methods (including lossless), arbitrary image channels, and multi-part files. The format excels at preserving subtle detail in both shadows and highlights, making it indispensable for compositing, colour grading, and any workflow that demands the highest fidelity in image data.
