About the HDR Format
HDR (High Dynamic Range), also known as Radiance RGBE, is an image format designed to store lighting information that exceeds the standard 8-bit-per-channel range. Developed by Greg Ward for the Radiance rendering system, HDR files use a compact encoding that represents each pixel with three 8-bit mantissas and a shared 8-bit exponent. This enables storage of a much wider range of luminance values — from deep shadows to bright highlights. HDR images are essential in computer graphics for environment mapping, image-based lighting, and photographic tone mapping workflows.
