About the WebP Format
WebP is a modern image format developed by Google that provides superior lossless and lossy compression for images on the web. WebP images are typically 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG files and 26% smaller than PNG files, while maintaining equivalent visual quality. The format supports transparency (alpha channel), animation, and both lossy and lossless compression modes.
