Why your editor refuses the file
WebP is a newer image format, and a program can only open it if its makers added support. When your version of Photoshop or Preview does not list WebP as a supported format, it refuses the file. One walkthrough from Hongkiat says that without the WebPShop plugin, “you won’t be able to open files with .webp extension” in Photoshop (source).

PNG or JPG?
- PNG keeps transparent backgrounds. We test it: a WebP with transparent pixels converts to a PNG with the transparency intact. PNG is lossless.
- JPG usually gives smaller files for photos, but it cannot store transparency. If your WebP has a transparent background, choose PNG.
